Etsy Find: ES Designs

Monday, March 31st, 2008

I’m thinking of making this a weekly feature since I love Etsy so much. For those that don’t know about, it’s an online marketplace where people can sell their handmade objects – from jewelry to photography, clothing to notecards. Some items are vintage recreations/finds while others are entirely handmade and original, beautiful pieces of art.

Yesterday I decided I wanted to start wearing more rings and went on Etsy to find some pretty things to quench my thirst. I went through pages upon pages of the most recently added items in the rings section of jewelry and finally decided to just add a whole batch of sellers to my favorites and come back to it another day, when I wasn’t loving every single thing I saw.

The one store whose designs I fell head-over-heels for though, was that ofJewelery by Elizabeth Scott. She works mainly in sterling silver to create simple designs inspired by nature. All of her pieces are fairly simple in shape and design, with hammered out textures and botanical shapes.

Some of my favorites:

“Shoreline Ring” – looks like it was pulled right from the beach, made to look like “sand and reflections in water.”

“Linen Necklace” – textured with a legitimate linen pattern, very simple but I love it.

“Birch Bark Ring” – which was actually textured with birch bark for an extremely earthy and natural design.

“Ginkgo Leaf Earrings” – I didn’t even know what Ginkgo looked like aside from the pill form and it’s great for these earrings, as well as the several rings she made from one leaf each.

“Petal Necklace” – modeled after a hydrangea petal.

These are just a few of the adorable, affordable, earthy designs made by Elizabeth Scott for sale in her Etsy store. After revisiting it, I’m about to give in and buy the birch bark ring I think…

So what does everyone think about the idea of starting a weekly “Etsy Find” post?

I WANT This Necklace.

Friday, March 28th, 2008

So it’s pretty convoluted how I came about the VANE online store, but now that I’ve seen it, I’m determined to get this amazing camera necklace – although I haven’t decided yet if I like the antique gold or gun metal best. Maybe if I suddenly come into a nice new chunk of income next week, I’ll buy both of them as a congratulations gift to myself. Or someone can claim to be my secret admirer and buy it for me. Or you can all donate a few dollars each to the “Kelly Really Likes That Camera Necklace and Deserves to Have It” fund I’ll start soon because there are no holidays coming up in the near future.

Too far?

Anyway, this necklace is adorable, and so are a lot of the other things they have on their website. I may have to check out one of their store locations. Thanks to VANE for leaving a comment on NYLON Magazine’s MySpace page.

Kate Moross Makes Awesome T-Shirts

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

Came across these shirts via CoolHunting today.

The shirts are limited edition, the design is simple yet inspired, the designer – Kate Moross – is quirky (check out her window doodles for the capsule collection she created for TopShop), adorable, and has a fantastic celeb following.

Buy me one of these if you love me.

HYmini – Handheld Wind or Solar Power

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

When I first started living by myself, I finally began to feel the pain of the many bills which come along with living by yourself – gas, electricity, cable, internet, etc. At first, I began looking for ways to shave pennies off of these bills, but this sort of spurred my now strong views on conservation and recycling. Now, instead of unplugging my microwave when I’m not using it simply as an attempt to save a few cents per month on my electricity bill, I do it even more so to save precious wattage that would otherwise be used to power that little clock that I never check. In addition to the measures I’ve adopted into my life to save time, energy, carbon dioxide, and money, I’m always looking for new ways to reduce my carbon footprint more and more.

This is my dream tool, realized.

The HYmini is, according the the website “A revolutionary way of capturing renewable power for your iPod, mobile phones, PDA, mp3, digital camera.” It’s a small tool for capturing green energy at any time for use rather than plugging in your charger yet again.

The first device captures wind energy.
You can even attach it to you bike or arm to capture wind energy while out exercising:

The second is a mini solar panel and you can buy multiple panels and link them together to harness more energy at once:

And neither one is very expensive. Amazing. It’s about time these things existed more prominently in popular culture.

One Less Desk

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

So I just came across this and think it’s fantastic. I’ve been trying to come up with ways to declutter my life this year. It’s kind of my unofficial new years resolution – an idea I’ve been considering in the back of my head for months and months, but never concretely dedicated myself to. It’s called OneLessDesk by Heckler Design and it’s key purpose it to banish the olden days of large hulking desks clutters with stacks of papers and doodads no one really needs. It’s simple and modeled on the streamlined Apple aesthetic. A little bit on the expensive side though, at least for someone like me, but the idea itself is what I’m really in love with.
