Phosphorescent and Bowerbirds at Mercury Lounge 2/29/08

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

It’s been a week and a half now since this show, but I’ve now finally gotten the images from the show posted. We skipped the first two bands at Mercury Lounge on Leap Day evening, February 29th since we had no idea who they were. Luckily, we got there just in time to nudge our way into a prime spot up front just as Phosphorescent started setting up. The boys hadn’t heard them beforehand, but I was psyched to see them. As well, I was just as or even more psyched to see Bowerbirds since I’d been listening to their album Hymns for a Dark Horse on repeat for the last 2-3 weeks. Phosphorescent played more songs than expected since the audience was loving them, and I think as a consequence Bowerbirds actually played a (great, but) pretty darn short set. When they finished, they made it pretty obvious they were done and the lights flipped on, no one expecting any encores or demanding them. Lucky for us, they played all the songs that get stuck in your head the easiest. Short, yet satisfying.

If But When: The Portrait Session

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

On Sunday I met up with some great guys, the band If But When so that I could take a few promo photos of them for future use. They’ve got a terrific sound and definitely deserved some worthy photos to represent them.

They picked me up at my place and we wandered down near the water and the old Domino Sugar factory on Kent Ave. for some fun inductrial set-ups. It turned out to be an ideal area, with lots of different backgrounds to work with.

You can see the entire album of the photos I took by clicking any of the images below.

I’m a Hustler Baby

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

I am sadly addicted to Simian Mobile Disco‘s song Hustler. I saw the music video before I’d listened to the album and it’s hilarious and genius. Now, when I hear it, I can only picture that video and I can’t help but put the song on repeat at least 3 more times. I don’t usually sit around and watch YouTube videos, but this is definitely worth checking out, both for the song itself and the visuals.

Free Kimya

Monday, January 14th, 2008

One of the truly great things about where I live would be all the great opportunities around me every day of the week. If I had more free time, I could easily go to a different concert, art exhibit, or random cultural event every night (or day if I could be independently wealthy of course).

A favorite place of mine that’s just a few blocks away from our apartment is Sound Fix Records, an awesome little indie music shop with a small cafe/bar area back room. Not only do they often have every CD you’ve been trying to find but just can’t seem to locate in the regular giants (ie. Best Buy, Target, Circuit City, etc.) of media retail, but they regularly have FREE shows in that lovely little back room. The artists are typically in town on tour, and are playing other shows before or after their stop at Sound Fix that cost money, and may quite often be sold out by the time you even find out they’ll be happening.

Tomorrow, I’m going to go see Kimya Dawson at 8pm and I’m very psyched about it. Former singer in The Moldy Peaches, she’s released several solo albums, and recently did the entire soundtrack for everyone’s latest favorite movie, Juno. This show is actually the CD release party for that movie’s soundtrack (which I didn’t realized until I just went onto her website now).

Come join me!

**UPDATE**

**This show had a line around the corner far in advance. We went for Vietnamese food around the corner instead.**

Beyond Hope Lies Photo Session

Monday, November 5th, 2007

Two weeks ago I went out with my friend Claire from grad school to Snitch and drank far too much. Apparently I met a few bands/people in bands that were playing that night though, so although the evening ended pretty badly for me, two weeks later it got me a fun little gig with one of those bands – Beyond Hope Lies.

They’re an emo/pop punk/rock sort of band based out of our grand lil city of NYC and yesterday they were filming a live performance of two songs for the next round of FameCast competition. I went along as their photographer and took some shots of them both before and during the taping.

Good fun, and fun pictures ensued.
